Benefits of
Foam Insulation
One of the greatest benefits of
foam insulation is the ability to seal small
holes and cracks that may be invisible to the
naked eye, something that can not be said of
either fiberglass or cellulose insulation.
Did you know that you have options when it comes
time to insulate your home? That pink fiberglass
insulation is not the only choice you have. More
and more people are choosing to use spray on
foam insulation, especially in the Midwest.
How foam insulation works
Polyurethane foam, which has been used by
appliance manufactures for years to insulate
refrigerators and water heaters, is the material
used for spray on insulation. This expanding
foam is sprayed on the surface of your attic or
walls to create an unbroken insulating surface.
This foam is created using liquid polyurethane,
which is applied using specialized pressurized
spray nozzles.
The benefits of foam insulation
One of the greatest benefits of foam insulation
is the ability to seal small holes and cracks
that may be invisible to the naked eye,
something that can not be said of either
fiberglass or cellulose insulation. The complete
seal created with the product almost eliminates
any air filtration into or out of a home.
Another great benefit of foam insulation is its
high R-value when compared to other insulation
products. This additional R-value per square
inch makes it possible for homebuilders to use 2
x 4s for the exterior wall construction as
opposed to the standard 2 x 6 construction which
is needed for other insulation products.
This not only gives you a well insulated home,
it can save lots of money on framing costs and
extended window and door jambs. Using this
smaller framing has the additional advantage of
giving the home owner additional living space,
up to 35 square feet in a 1,500 square foot
home. This is like gaining an extra linen
closet!
Other benefits of foam insulation include the
fact that it is both fire and insect repellant,
helps to control condensation of moisture, and
it won’t shrink or settle.
